Industry mix and world market leaders as key factors

The cross-Länder planning region Donau-Iller covers an area of approx. 5,460 square kilometres. The regional section lying in Baden-Wuerttemberg includes the Alb-Donau district, the Biberach district and the city of Ulm. The center of the region is formed by the city of Ulm in Baden-Wuerttemberg and the Bavarian city of Neu-Ulm. The regional clusters and cluster initiatives, respectively mostly operate across the federal state borders. Compared to Baden-Wuerttemberg as a whole, the region's economy is characterized by a particularly strong influence of the manufacturing sector. Consequently, business activities in the services sector account for a smaller share compared to the federal state's average.

The region's economy relies very much on small and medium-sized enterprises including many family businesses. But also numerous world market leaders are located here. The industrial strength (inter alia mechanical engineering, pharmaceutics) of the region is complemented by an excellent industry mix.

The most important industries include (by the number of jobs liable for social insurance contributions excluding commerce, the construction and the public sector):

  • the metal and mechanical engineering industry as well as the manufacture of fabricated metal
  • the commercial vehicle construction including suppliers
  • the manufacture of pharmaceutical products
  • logistics

Compared to the other districts, the innovative strength of the Donau-Iller region occupies a ranking in the upper quarter. The hereto contributing factors include the above-average innovative level - ranking third among the listed regions - as well as the outstanding development of the region's innovation activities. Highly-innovative companies and an extensive research landscape with universities and non-university research institutions have played a decisive role with respect to this positive development.
