Covering an area of 2,137 square kilometres, the Middle Upper Rhine region is the smallest of the twelve regions in Baden-Wuerttemberg according to the land-planning scheme, but counts more than one million inhabitants. The region is located in the centre of the upper Rhine area surrounded by the agglomerations Frankfurt/Main and Basel. The region includes the cities of Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden as well as the two administrative districts of Karlsruhe and Rastatt.
Notably Karlsruhe and its surroundings are one of Europe's leading locations for information and communication technologies, nanotechnologies, the automotive, energy and the mobility sector as well as for cultural and creative industries. Due to the region's geographical situation in immediate proximity to the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the French Department of Bas-Rhin, some of the local cluster initiatives are operating on a cross-border basis.
The region's innovation strength can be seen in a dense network of universities, research institutes and high-tech enterprises. The settlement of the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT), of several Fraunhofer institutes and the Informatics Research Centre (FZI) - to mention but a few of the numerous renowned institutions - has created an excellent density of scientific competence. Compared to the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg as a whole, the economy of the Middle Upper Rhine region is rather characterized by business activities in the services sector, whereas production plays a less significant role. Hereby, the share of corporate services is also above the federal state's average.
